Are Visas Still Required to Travel to the USA? Visas, ESTA, and the New Realities of Traveling to the United States

Traveling to the USA has always been exciting – but it also comes with its share of formalities. Many travelers still wonder: Do I need a visa? Or is an ESTA enough? We take a closer look at the current entry requirements for the USA and what you should know before booking your flight.

What is ESTA and who can use it?

ESTA is a simplified entry authorization for citizens of countries participating in the Visa Waiver Program. Poland joined this program in 2019 – so if you’re traveling for tourism or business for up to 90 days, you don’t need a traditional visa, just ESTA.

When is a visa required?

If you plan to work, study, stay longer than 90 days, or have previously been denied entry to the U.S., you will need a classic visa. Keep in mind that obtaining a visa can be time-consuming and requires an interview at the U.S. embassy.

More than just forms – biometric data matters

Upon entry to the U.S., fingerprints and a photograph are taken. Make sure your passport details are up-to-date and clear – even a small typo can cause problems at the border.

Apply for ESTA well in advance

It’s best to submit your ESTA application at least 72 hours before travel, though many apply several weeks ahead. The fee is approximately 21 USD, and the authorization is valid for 2 years.
