Travel to the UK After Brexit – New Rules and ETA from 2025

Brexit has brought significant changes to travel to the United Kingdom. New regulations have been in place since 2021, and starting in 2025, an additional requirement will be introduced – the ETA system. What does this mean for travelers from Poland?

Passport instead of ID card

Since Brexit, you can no longer enter the UK with just an ID card – a valid passport is required for the entire duration of your stay. This is a fundamental but crucial change.

What is ETA and when does it come into effect?

ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) is an electronic entry permit for the UK. Starting in 2025, it will be mandatory for citizens of non-EU countries, including Poland. ETA will be required for every entry and is similar to the ESTA system used in the USA.

Can you still travel without a visa?

Yes – if your stay in the UK is less than 6 months for tourism or business purposes. ETA is not a visa but an additional border security measure.

Important customs rules and restrictions

Post-Brexit, regulations on transporting goods – including food and alcohol – have changed. Make sure to check the new limits to avoid any issues at the border.
